Memoir Authors – Guide to the 2025 Women in Publishing Summit

Memoir Authors – Guide to the 2025 Women in Publishing Summit

For the Memoir Authors

We know there are many options when it comes to choosing a virtual conference for authors, so we’re breaking down the workshops in the Women in Publishing Summit by tracks and areas of focus. The Women in Publishing Summit is a virtual event for authors and publishing professionals that runs from March 5 to 8, 2025.

We focus on building community, educating our community, and creating an environment for support, encouragement, and sharing of resources. While the conference is virtual and runs “live” in zoom over the course of the event, all sessions are recorded, and you can rewatch them as many times as you’d like through the end of the year. We also have networking, community-building events, and special bonus sessions.

This is the breakdown of workshops that are specific to memoir authors, however, you’ll find that there are many sessions throughout the conference that will help you understand routes to publishing, marketing, business growth, and more. Check out the full schedule here.

Day 1 – Writing/Mindset for Memoir Authors

Hiding Real People in Real Stories
Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane

Find out what steps you can take to avoid identifying real people in your nonfiction book. Discover how to create pseudonyms, avoid compromising safety, and write about people who would rather fade into the background of your story. Since 2007, Roxanne’s unique and multi-award winning method of storytelling has changed the lives of thousands of budding authors, allowing them to bring their messages to life in nonfiction books with structure, connection to the reader and potential profit. She is a prolific ghostwriter, author, workshop facilitator, writing mentor and journalist.

The Art of the Literary Sex Scene (Fiction and Memoir)
Victoria Hetherington & Patricia Westerhof

This session will provide writers of fiction and memoir techniques for writing character-driven, tasteful, and powerful sex scenes that work in today’s marketplace. Some say CanLit’s a snooze, and erotic writing can’t be literary — and we say, time to wake up and get steamy! What better time to explore the art of the literary sex scene than a workshop designed by women for women writers in a women-identified space? Join Canadian authors Patricia Westerhof and Victoria Hetherington for this seminar exploring this crucial yet under-taught component of literary fiction.

The (Hidden) Costs & Challenges of Publishing
Karen Strauss

Learn all you need to know about getting your book published, whether working with a publisher or self-publishing on your own. Karen Strauss is the publisher of Hybrid Global Publishing. Designed to publish books by speakers and entrepreneurs and other indie authors, Hybrid Global is an independent publisher who offers author services such as editorial, custom cover and interior design, distribution and marketing. Karen has worked in publishing for more than 30 years with broad experience in all aspects of publishing, sales, marketing, strategic planning and distribution.

Day 2 – Routes to Publication for Memoir Authors

Catching Legal Red Flags in a Memoir Before They Catch You
Tisha Morris

Learn to spot potential legal risks and what to do about them in order to minimize risks, while maintaining the literary quality of your memoir. Publishing Attorney Tisha Morris walks you through a legal checklist of defamation, invasion of privacy, copyright, and other legal red flags to help you minimize the risk of legal exposure, not to mention unnecessary legal fees. Tisha Morris is an author and the founder of Morris Entertainment Law where she practices entertainment law with a mission to help diverse voices tell their story for a better world.

Audiobooks: From Microphone to Marketplace
Mary Catherine Jones

Mary Catherine will give an insider’s perspective on the burgeoning Audiobook industry and discuss multiple ways to create an audiobook—from bootstrapping to pro-production and everything in-between! Mary Catherine Jones is the Owner and Executive Producer of The Audiobook Experience at Voice Over Vermont. For over 15 years she has been helping authors find their voice by helping them create amazing, award winning audiobooks.

Day 3 – Marketing & Book Launch for Memoir Authors

How to Write Six Months of Branded Content from Your Book for Increased Book Sales
Monica Miller

Monica Miller will guide published authors on leveraging their nonfiction books into a wealth of marketing content to expand their reach and boost sales. Marketing is often one of the most daunting challenges authors face after publishing, but this session will teach you how to repurpose your written content into a dynamic marketing plan that saves time, energy, and frustration. Discover how to elevate your marketing game by transforming your book into a continuous stream of engaging content that attracts new readers, clients, and opportunities.

Marketing Your Memoir So It Sells
Jennifer Wilkov

Memoir writers know that marketing their inspiring life stories in their books is 100% their responsibility but most don’t have the skillset or knowledge to create a winning marketing plan for it. It’s time to build a plan to successfully market your memoir so it sells. In this presentation, Jennifer S. Wilkov, the founder of Your Book Is Your Hook, LLC, will show you how to master the art of determining what belongs in your memoir marketing platform—and what doesn’t—before, during, and after it has been published.

Day 4 – Business Growth for Memoir Authors

BookBub Basics for Authors: Boost your Platform with LitRing
Samantha Williams

Learn how to make BookBub work for you! From account creation to BookBub ads and everything in between, join the promo masters of LitRing and Aurora Publicity for this platform training to bring in new readers for your books. Samantha Williams is a passionate marketer with almost a decade of experience in publishing. She is the owner of LitRing, a book promotions company, and the founder of Aurora Publicity, a marketing and author assistant company. With degrees in advertising, marketing, and PR, she often refers to herself as “The Matchmaker” for authors and assistants.

Beyond the Bestseller: Creating Multiple Revenue Streams for Authorpreneurs
Alesha Brown

Alesha Brown will share step-by-step guidance and examples, ensuring attendees can transform their books into thriving businesses. Alesha Brown is the Founder & CEO of Fruition Publishing Concierge Services®, a hybrid publisher devoted to helping authors find their voice, monetize their expertise, and create profitable author platforms. Alesha’s work led to her receiving the 2019 Inside Business’ Entrepreneurial Excellence award and 2023 Women in Business Achievement award.

The Women in Publishing Summit Will Take Place March 5–8, 2025

The Women in Publishing Summit Will Take Place March 5–8, 2025

The eighth annual Women in Publishing Summit will take place March 5–8, 2025. This online conference for women features workshops, panels, networking events, and more to help aspiring and published authors grow their craft, and to give publishing professionals opportunities to expand their network and skills. This event attracts writers, poets, publishers, editors, designers, marketers, publishing assistants, and other professionals who contribute to the creation and promotion of books. This year’s event is sponsored by Hybrid Global Publishing.

The summit is hosted by Alexa Bigwarfe, a USA Today best-selling author, speaker, publisher, and author coach. Bigwarfe’s publishing journey began with her first book, Sunshine After the Storm: A Survival Guide for the Grieving Mother, written after the loss of her infant daughter to offer hope to other mothers in their darkest times. The process of writing, publishing, and seeing how her book impacted others gave her a sense of purpose—and ignited her love for the publishing world. Now, Bigwarfe runs Write | Publish | Sell, focusing on empowering authors to build their platforms, grow their businesses, and reach new readers. She leads the Women in Publishing Summit to help strengthen a community of writers and publishing professionals. The publishing world can be challenging and isolating, but Bigwarfe finds that “in community, we can truly empower, encourage, and support each other. We’re better together.”

The Women in Publishing Summit is more important this year than ever. This event aims to highlight the power of stories and books, uplift women’s voices in the publishing industry, and foster an inclusive community.

The summit will kick off with a keynote address from Deraeé Henderson on March 4. Henderson is an author and speaker passionate about inspiring others to embrace their purpose. Some of the 40+ sessions offered this year include Writing and Editing with Your Audience in Mind from Kathy Meis, Why People Buy: Using Psychology to Sell More Books with Chelsea Bennett, Be Contagious Instead of Going Viral with Markeyla Henton, Book Reviews: Getting More Stars Than You Know What to Do With from Hannah Jacobson, and Beyond Courses: Crafting Immersive Learning Experiences with Digital Workbooks presented by Parchelle Tashi. Sessions are divided along four tracks: Beginner, General, Intermediate/Advanced, and Professional. Each day also has a theme: Writing & Mindset on day one, Routes to Publication on day two, Marketing & Book Launch on day three, and Business Growth on day four. There will be multiple networking opportunities each day, panels, live sponsor booths, and a publisher speed dating event.

Ticket holders gain access to the Women in Publishing community all year long with pre- and post-conference webinars, recordings of the live sessions from the conference, special offers from event sponsors, an active Facebook group, and monthly networking sessions.

The Women in Publishing Summit is the largest online conference for women, and those who identify as women, in publishing. The four-day event is a combination of live workshops, panel discussions, networking events, and special events, run completely online. Contact the team at support@womeninpublishingsummit.com. Tips for Attending Virtual Conferences for Authors

Tips for Attending Virtual Conferences for Authors

Tips for Attending Virtual Conferences for Authors

As an author, virtual conferences offer an incredible opportunity to learn, connect, and grow—all from the comfort of your home. They offer the greatest benefit of not having to travel, pay for airfare, and book a hotel, but often because it’s virtual, attendees don’t make the same kind of planning considerations to ensure they get the most from the event.

Whether you’re a first-time attendee or a seasoned participant, planning ahead can make all the difference in how much value you get out of the event. Here are our tips for attending virtual conferences, with some bonus tips specific to the Women in Publishing Summit.

1. Block Your Calendar

Review the schedule of the conference, and make sure you’ve blocked off time, just like you would if you were attending in person. Don’t schedule meetings or key deadlines during this timeframe. Even if sessions are recorded, you’ll gain the most from attending the virtual sessions “live.” If the conference is all pre-recorded content, be sure to participate in any live Q&A or special sessions.

WIP Summit Tip: This is an intense and content-packed four-day event, running from 9 AM – 7 PM ET most days. You don’t want to miss out! If you have appointments or commitments, try to reschedule as much as possible so you can fully engage. If it’s too overwhelming to attend all sessions, focus on the networking, coffee chats, sponsor booths, and other live events that you can’t get in the recordings.

2. Get Plenty of Rest

See #1! Just because it’s virtual doesn’t mean it’s not tiring! In fact, sitting in front of a computer all day is probably more tiring than an in-person event. Make sure you schedule in rest time, especially after the conference. If possible, clear your schedule for a day or two after the virtual event ends. Just because you’re not traveling, that doesn’t mean you won’t be tired! Or that you’ll have a long list of things you want to follow up on.

3. Plan Your Food Ahead of Time

It’s easy to forget to eat during a packed event! Plan simple meals in advance, especially if you have family members relying on you. My go-to solution? The crockpot! Here are some easy meal ideas:

  • Salsa chicken
  • Pulled pork
  • Premade meals like lasagna or pizza

You might also consider budgeting for takeout.

Have plenty of healthy snacks available that you can easily grab between sessions. The key is to minimize cooking stress so you can stay focused, but not forget to feed your family, or yourself.

4. Stay Hydrated!

Keep a water bottle nearby and remind yourself to drink throughout the day. Hydration is key to maintaining your energy levels.

5. Prioritize Your Conference Schedule

Download the schedule in advance and highlight the sessions most relevant to you right now and in the upcoming 3-6 months.

WIP Summit Tip: Prioritize sessions where you’ll benefit most from live participation, such as:

  • Coffee chats
  • Q&As with sponsors
  • Publisher speed dating

Remember, all sessions are recorded, so you can always catch up later. If you’re still writing your book, a session on launching a published book might not be your top priority just yet.

6. Step Away When Needed

Feeling overwhelmed? It’s okay to take breaks! In most virtual events, all sessions are recorded, so you won’t miss out if you need to rewatch later. Pay attention to cut off dates for access to the recordings. In some free virtual events, it’s as short as 24 hours without purchasing the All Access Pass. Other conferences vary from 3-12 months to as long as 7 years.

7. Bring a Notebook and Fun Pens

While you can rewatch sessions in most virtual conferences for authors, it helps to take notes in real time. If the conference offers a workbook, download that, print it out, and put it in a binder if you prefer.

WIP Summit Tip: You can download your workbook and print it out in advance OR you can order it from Amazon so you don’t have to print out 104 pages!

Order from Amazon here. (aff link) – only order if you have a ticket, or this will do nothing for you!

8. Research Sponsors and Publishers in Advance

Sponsors in a virtual conference for authors are often chosen specifically because they offer tools and services that you’ll need at some point in your journey to write, publish, and sell your book. Most sponsors offer some sort of deal or discount. Pay attention to what you’ll need in the next 3-6 months, and take advantage of the deals they offer. Take advantage of any opportunity to connect with sponsors.

WIP Summit Tip: You’ll have opportunities to connect directly with industry professionals and sponsors, AND a Publisher Speed Dating Event to meet with publishers and self-publishing assist companies. Do some research beforehand so you know who you want to talk to and what questions to ask. See all sponsors here.

9. Schedule a Post-Conference Review Day

We all leave conferences feeling inspired—but then life happens. Block off time 1-2 weeks after the event to review your notes, make an action plan, and follow up with contacts. Then be sure to set aside time in your schedule on a regular basis for rewatching content and implementing what you’ve learned.

10. Attend the Orientation Session

If an orientation session is offered, attend it! Not all conferences offer this, but we do at the Women in Publishing Summit. If you’ve purchased a ticket, you’ll receive dates, times, and access for the two orientation sessions we offer for attendees to make the experience less overwhelming.

11. Use a Time Zone Converter

Time zones are one of the most frustrating elements of a virtual conference. Pay attention to the time zone that your conference is scheduled in, and make sure you know what that means in YOUR time zone. You might want to put calendar alerts in the correct time on your schedule so that you don’t miss out.

WIP Summit Tip: All sessions are in ET/NY time. We’ll provide a time zone converter and an embeddable calendar on the website, but if you’re in a different time zone, double-check when sessions start for you!

12. Arrange Childcare & Minimize Distractions

If you have family responsibilities, try to arrange help in advance. School pickups, getting kids or grandkids to and from soccer practice or piano lessons, etc. These things literally take you away from the event and can reduce the impact of the event. It’s often a good idea to arrange your schedule AS IF you actually traveled somewhere for the event, so that you get max benefit.

13. Most Importantly—Have Fun!

By planning ahead, staying organized, and engaging with the community, you’ll set yourself up for a successful and enjoyable conference experience. Engage when you can, take breaks when needed, and enjoy the process!

WIP Summit Tip: The Women in Publishing Summit is a fantastic event with a supportive community. Don’t stress—remember, you have access to all recordings, monthly workshops, and networking opportunities even after the event. And make sure to take advantage of the year-round programming we have for our community, as found on the EVENTS page.

The Kidlit Authors Guide to the 2025 Women in Publishing Summit

The Kidlit Authors Guide to the 2025 Women in Publishing Summit

Calling all Kidlit Authors!
Your Guide to the Kidlit Authors Workshops at the 2025 Women in Publishing Summit

This is the breakdown of workshops that are specific to Kidlit authors, however, you’ll find that there are many sessions throughout the conference that will help you understand routes to publishing, marketing, business growth, and more. Check out the full schedule here.

Day 1 – Writing/Mindset

Kidlit 101: How to Write Readable and Appealing Stories for Children to Read and Love and Adults to Buy

Antoinette Truglio Martin

Children’s literature encompasses a wide age range that follows a developmental path for language development and emergent and sustained independent reading skills into a lifetime of reading joy. Understanding how children process readable language in the different stages of development is key to a successful children’s book. Children’s book writers juggle their wordsmithing to meet the developmental levels of their target audiences. They must also mind the readability levels for publishers and marketers purposes and the entertainment value for adults (teachers and parents, grandparents) while appealing to children’s imagination and maintaining creative integrity. Antoinette Truglio Martin is a retired speech therapist and special ed teacher, who now enjoys life as a children’s book author, memoirist, and blogger. She has published a memoir, an award-winning middle-grade historical fiction series, and a picture book.
