Author-Forward Marketing Lessons from 8 Authors

Author-Forward Marketing Lessons from 8 Authors

You Are the Platform: What Five Indie Authors and a University Press Panel Taught Me About Author-Forward Marketing

I moderated at the Piedmont Publishing Symposium and our topic was: author-forward marketing. The panel featured three nonfiction authors traditionally published through university presses—a cookbook author, a writer tackling race and religion inside the American church, and an environmental scholar—and every one of them had crossed 5,000+ print sales. Not ebooks. That’s a number most publishers would celebrate.

And here’s the thing: they took charge of their marketing. (Apparently part of the requirements of being published through a university press is providing your aggressive marketing plan. Seems smart!)

This is the part the “I’ll just go traditional so someone else can market me” crowd doesn’t want to hear. The author is the platform. Always. Whether you’re with one of the Big Five, a university press, or fully indie, the relationships, the expertise, the stage presence, and the willingness to show up year after year are what move books. Period.

The Lessons That Translated to Every Genre

What floored me as I sat between these three nonfiction authors was how exactly their tactics mirrored what I’ve spent years teaching indie fiction authors. One of them spent twenty years writing articles and speaking at churches before his book even existed — by launch day, those same churches were inviting him back to host events and buy copies. The cookbook author shows up at food and wine events, gets featured in Southern Living and on the Food Network, because she knows precisely where her readers already are. The environmental author negotiated his deal so royalties went to a humanitarian clinic, freeing him to stand in front of college students and pitch his book without flinching.

Different worlds. Same playbook.

  • Know your who.
  • Build relationships long before you need them.
  • Use every stage you’re given.
  • Anchor your marketing in something real, or it will always feel gross.

That last one is the bottom of the iceberg. The reason so many authors hate marketing isn’t because marketing is gross — it’s because they’re marketing a book they haven’t fully connected to themselves. The question to sit with is not “how do I sell this,” it’s “why am I writing this in the first place?” When you can answer that honestly, the audience becomes obvious and the selling stops feeling like selling.

Five Indie Authors Saying Exactly the Same Thing

The symposium panel sent me back to a conversation I had a year ago with five women from the Book Launch in a Box community — historical romance, YA dystopian, contemporary romance, post-apocalyptic thrillers, and historical fiction. Five wildly different genres. The exact same principles underneath. So I’m replaying that episode this week, because the message bears repeating and the new wave of authors in our community deserves to hear it.

Linda Needham sold 11 historical romances to HarperCollins back when her publisher told her not to market. Now she’s reissuing her backlist as an indie and just released her first nonfiction book — and the most useful thing she learned wasn’t a tactic, it was Pam Shepard’s positioning module, which finally helped her answer: what is this book actually about, and why would someone want it?

C.C. Robinson thought 50 reviews would be easy because she had 50 friends. She had to ask 150 people. She’ll be the first to tell you the first 20 to 30 reviews are the hardest part of any launch — and that an ARC team is not optional, it’s foundational.

Zariah L. Banks writes under a pen name, which means no Google history, no built-in trust, no easy proof of who she is. Her solution: a relentlessly maintained marketing profile that lives as a single source of truth for every bio, synopsis, link, and pitch — plus a virtual book tour on release day to widen the splash.

Tracy Myhre came to fiction from screenwriting during COVID. She’s done Book Launch in a Box three times because the industry keeps changing and her questions keep evolving. Her hardest-won lesson: launching is not the end. It’s the beginning.

Pat Black-Gould wrote The Crystal Beads with Purple Butterfly Press, then self-published a historical novel in a completely different genre. Her tip is one I rarely hear: think about marketing while you’re still writing. Your afterword, your back matter, your bonus content — those become the spine of every future panel, blog post, and presentation.

The Common Thread

Across both the symposium panel and the indie author roundtable, the same core ideas surface:

  1. Start with audience, not aesthetics. Who is this for? Where do they already gather?
  2. The second book multiplies the first. Social proof compounds. Series sell series.
  3. Read in your genre. You can’t write competitively in a category you don’t actually consume.
  4. Community is the unfair advantage. Whether it’s an academic department, a church network, or a Book Launch in a Box Facebook group, the people around you are your distribution.
  5. Marketing is not the part that comes after. It’s the thing you’re doing every time you show up, write an article, speak on a panel, or send a newsletter — long before there’s a book to sell.

In this podcast episode, Alexa and Mindy discuss:

  • What is Warren Publishing? A hybrid publishing company with over 36 years of history. Acquired by Mindy Kuhn nearly nine years ago.
  • Types of books they publish: Children’s books, fiction, nonfiction, and business books.
  • Key benefits of working with Warren Publishing: Authors retain their rights (like self-publishing); professional editing, design, marketing, and distribution included. They are highly selectivity—only 20% of submissions are accepted. They give higher royalty rates compared to traditional publishing.
  • Tips for Authors Seeking Publication
  • Make Two Lists: A wish list of what you want in a publisher or publishing route & a “no-go” list of what you don’t want (e.g., no upfront costs or specific deadlines).
  • Research Your Publishing Options: Understand the spectrum: traditional publishing, self-publishing, hybrid, and others (e.g., AI-based publishing platforms). Choose a model that aligns with your goals and budget.
  • Polish Your Manuscript: Ensure it’s as refined as possible before submission. Even if a publisher offers editing, first impressions matter.
  • Prepare to Market Your Book: Be ready to actively promote your work, regardless of the publishing model. Know your target audience and comparative titles (comp titles).
Set up a dedicated author social media presence.
  • Why Hybrid Publishing is a Strong Option: A balance between traditional and self-publishing models. Offers professional support while allowing authors more control. Growing acceptance in the publishing industry (e.g., award recognition for hybrid presses).
Ideal for authors seeking collaboration and engagement in the publishing process.
  • Encouragement for Writers: Writing and publishing are a marathon, not a sprint. Be realistic about expectations—focus on creating quality work and enjoying the process. Publishing a book is always exciting, no matter how many you’ve done before.

Is a Hybrid Publisher the Right Fit for You?

Is a Hybrid Publisher the Right Fit for You?

Why Hybrid Publishing Could Be the Perfect Fit for Your Book

If you’re an aspiring author or seasoned writer exploring publishing options, you may have heard of hybrid publishing. Somewhere between traditional publishing and self-publishing, hybrid presses offer a unique and flexible pathway to bring your book to life. In a recent podcast episode, Alexa Bigwarfe interviewed Mindy Kuhn, CEO of Warren Publishing, a well-established hybrid press. Together, they dove into the benefits of hybrid publishing and why it could be the ideal choice for many authors.

What is Hybrid Publishing?

Hybrid publishing blends the best aspects of traditional publishing and self-publishing. As Mindy explains, “If you think about publishing as a spectrum, one side is traditional publishing, and the other is self-publishing. Hybrid publishing sits right in the middle.” Here are some defining characteristics:

  • Retained Rights: Authors maintain the rights to their work, unlike in traditional publishing where publishers often acquire them.
  • Professional Support: Hybrid presses handle editing, design, marketing, and distribution—all the things that can be overwhelming in self-publishing.
  • Author Investment: Like self-publishing, authors contribute financially to the process, but this investment ensures a high-quality, polished book.
  • Higher Royalties: Hybrid presses often provide higher royalty rates compared to traditional publishing, giving authors a better return on their investment.

The Warren Publishing Experience

Warren Publishing, with over 36 years in the industry, exemplifies what hybrid presses can offer. Mindy Kuhn, who acquired the company nearly nine years ago, shared how her team combines professional expertise with a collaborative approach:

  • Selective Process: Warren Publishing reviews submissions carefully and accepts only about 20% of manuscripts, ensuring a high standard of quality.
  • Comprehensive Editing: From developmental edits to final proofreading, each stage is handled by professionals who work closely with the author.
  • Award-Winning Design: With a background in design and marketing, Warren Publishing specializes in creating visually stunning layouts and covers.
  • Marketing & Distribution: Authors receive marketing guidance and access to distribution channels, making their books more visible and accessible to readers.

Why Choose Hybrid Publishing?

For many authors, hybrid publishing provides the perfect balance of creative control and professional support. Here are some key reasons to consider this model:

  1. Collaboration with Professionals: Authors don’t have to navigate the complexities of publishing alone. Hybrid presses offer expert guidance while still allowing the author’s voice to shine.
  2. Flexibility and Control: Authors retain the rights to their books and have more involvement in the process compared to traditional publishing.
  3. Higher Quality Output: Professional editing, design, and marketing services ensure a polished, market-ready product—an advantage over the DIY nature of self-publishing.
  4. Broader Acceptance: Hybrid publishing is gaining recognition and credibility within the industry. Award-winning hybrid presses demonstrate that this model can produce outstanding books.

Tips for Authors Considering Hybrid Publishing

If hybrid publishing sounds like a good fit, here are a few tips from Mindy to guide your journey:

  • Know Your Goals: Make a list of what you want in a publishing experience. Identify your “must-haves” and “no-gos” to find the best fit for your needs.
  • Research Your Options: Understand the different publishing models and investigate hybrid presses to ensure they align with your goals.
  • Polish Your Manuscript: While hybrid presses offer professional editing, submitting a refined manuscript makes a strong first impression.
  • Prepare to Market Your Book: Regardless of the publishing route, authors need to actively promote their work. Start building your author platform early.

Resources and Publishers Mentioned

If you’re considering hybrid publishing, here are some reputable publishers and resources to explore:

Is Hybrid Publishing Right for You?

Hybrid publishing isn’t for everyone, but it’s an excellent choice for authors who want:

  • A high-quality book with professional support.
  • Creative control over their work.
  • A collaborative publishing experience.
  • Higher royalty rates than traditional publishing.

If you’re ready to explore this option, consider reaching out to hybrid presses like Warren Publishing. Visit http://www.womeninpublishingsummit.com/warren to learn more about their submission process and how they can help bring your book to life.

Publishing a book is an exciting journey, and with the right partner, it can also be a rewarding one. Hybrid publishing offers the tools and support to turn your dream into a reality—while keeping you at the heart of the process.

Female founder and CEO

Karen Strauss founded Hybrid Global Publishing to provide innovative options for talented authors to publish on a level playing field with traditional publishers. Her team has a combined 80 years of experience in the publishing industry, having published more than 1,400 authors since 2008. They make publishing easier and more profitable by managing all the details and complexities of production, distribution, marketing, and sales. It starts with an idea for your book and then the delivery of your manuscript to provide support and other promotional capabilities for worldwide distribution. Hybrid Global Publishing is a one-stop shop for entrepreneurs, coaches, speakers and authors to provide a complete publishing experience.

Karen Strauss has over 30 years of experience in the publishing industry; she has held management and marketing positions at major publishing houses, including The Free Press, Crown, Random House, and Avon. Karen founded Hybrid Global Publishing in 2011 to help authors, speakers, and entrepreneurs get their message out by writing and publishing a book.

She offers publishing, distribution, and marketing services for organizations and individual authors.
