5 Essential Tips for Promoting Your Book Before Launch Day

5 Essential Tips for Promoting Your Book Before Launch Day

Your publishing date is fast approaching and you’re staring at the daunting task of promoting your book before launch day. Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered! From leveraging social media to securing early reviews, these strategies will set you on the path to a successful book launch.

In today’s saturated book market, a strong book launch strategy is essential for any author hoping to make an impact and achieve success. Having a well-planned and executed book launch is crucial in creating buzz and generating interest in your work.

Your book launch strategy should create awareness, build anticipation, establish author credibility, and set your book up for success. With proper planning and execution, a successful book launch can set your book up for long-term success in the ever-evolving publishing industry.

Tip 1: Start marketing early—building anticipation and buzz before launch day

One common mistake many authors make is waiting until the last minute to start marketing their book. We’re firm believers in “You should have started marketing yesterday.” Waiting until your book is ready to launch can lead to a lack of buzz and interest around your launch day, resulting in lower book sales. To avoid this, it is important to start promoting your book early on and build anticipation and excitement among potential readers.

The first step in building anticipation for your book launch is to create a solid marketing plan. This should include a timeline of when you will start promoting your book, what platforms you will use, and what strategies you will implement. It’s essential to have a clear understanding of your target audience and where they spend their time online so that you can effectively reach them.

Connect directly with potential readers who have shown interest in your work. Don’t underestimate the power of word-of-mouth promotion from family members, friends, colleagues, and even beta readers who have read an advanced copy of your book. Encourage them to share your book with their networks and leave reviews on platforms like Amazon and Goodreads.

Tip 2: ARCs (Advance Reader Copies) and launch teams for reviews and promotion

You can’t go wrong with giving out Advance Reader Copies (ARCs) and creating a launch team. ARCs are early copies of your book that are sent out to a select group of readers in exchange for reviews and promotion. You can send countless digital copies, but we typically recommend limiting the number of physical copies you give out. Your launch team is a bit more dedicated than your ARC team. These are dedicated individuals who have agreed to help spread the word about your book before it hits the shelves. Some people will belong to both groups.

Between these two groups, you will reach new audiences, generate reviews, create hype before launch day, and improve your book’s visibility.

By sending ARCs to influential reviewers or bloggers in your genre, you have the potential to reach new audiences that may not have heard of you before. These reviewers often have large followings who trust their recommendations, making them valuable allies in getting the word out about your book.

Creating a launch team brings together enthusiastic supporters who are willing to help promote your book. These team members can share your book on their social media platforms, write reviews, and even host giveaways or events to spread the word about your upcoming release.

ARCs and launch teams are powerful tools for promoting your book before it hits the shelves.

Tip 3: Position your book properly—targeting the right audience and leveraging your author brand

One of the most crucial elements of promoting a book successfully is positioning it in front of the right audience. Identifying and targeting the specific group of readers who are most likely to be interested in your book will significantly increase its chances of success. This tip also involves leveraging your author brand to create a strong presence in the market and establish yourself as an expert in your genre.

Once you have identified your target audience, it’s time to leverage your author brand. Your author brand is essentially how you present yourself as an author, both online and offline. To effectively leverage your author brand, make sure all aspects of it align with your book’s message and tone. This includes having a well-designed website, active social media presence, professional headshots, and consistent branding across all platforms. By creating a strong online presence that reflects who you are as an author, you will attract readers who resonate with your brand.

Positioning your book correctly and leveraging your author brand go hand in hand when it comes to promoting your book successfully.

Tip 4: Plan launch day activities—virtual events, giveaways, collaborations and more!

Your book launch day is a significant milestone in your writing journey and it deserves to be celebrated! However, in today’s digital age where everything is online, it is important to plan virtual launch day activities to reach a wider audience and create buzz for your book. Here are some essential tips for planning successful launch day activities:

Host Virtual Events:

Virtual events are a great way to engage with your readers and promote your book on launch day. You can organize virtual book readings, Q&A sessions, or author interviews through platforms like Zoom or Facebook Live. This will not only give your readers a chance to connect with you but also allow them to learn more about your book before purchasing it.

Collaborate with Other Authors:

Collaborating with other authors in your genre can help you expand your reach and gain new readers on launch day. You can co-host virtual events or cross-promote each other’s books on social media platforms. This will not only benefit both of you but also create a sense of community within the writing industry.

Create Buzz with Giveaways:

Who doesn’t love free stuff? Offering giveaways on launch day is an effective way to generate excitement around your book and attract potential readers. You can offer signed copies of your book, merchandise related to the story, or even exclusive access to bonus content as prizes for the giveaway.

Utilize Social Media:

Social media has become one of the most powerful tools for promoting any product, including books! Create a buzz around your book by using relevant hashtags, sharing sneak peeks or behind-the-scenes moments from the writing process leading up to launch day. Engage with your followers through interactive posts and contests that will keep them interested in your upcoming release.

Reach Out to Influencers:

Influencer marketing has become increasingly popular in recent years and can be a great way to promote your book on launch day. Collaborating with influencers who have a strong following in your target audience can help you reach a wider audience and gain credibility for your book.

Launch day is not just about promoting your book, but also about celebrating the hard work you put into it. By planning virtual events, collaborating with others, utilizing social media, offering giveaways and reaching out to influencers, you can make your launch a success and create momentum for the future success of your book. So start planning now to make sure that your launch day is one to remember!

5 Essential Tips for Promoting Your Book Before Launch Day

Realistic Goals: The Foundation for a Successful Book Launch

Transform Aspirations into Achievable Book Launch Goals

It’s time to move beyond vague resolutions like I want to be a published author and embrace realistic, actionable goals that will propel you toward a successful book launch. Thoughtful goal setting is the key to turning dreams into reality. Here’s how to craft a plan that works.

The Pitfalls of Unrealistic Goals

While ambition drives progress, setting unattainable targets can lead to frustration. Instead, focus on doing the right things—and knowing how many of them you need to achieve your objectives. Being honest about your resources—time, money, and energy—will shape goals that inspire, not overwhelm. Ask yourself specific questions like, How many books do I want to sell?

Setting Realistic Goals

Start with clarity: define distinct, measurable objectives. Break larger goals into manageable milestones and create a timeline to keep yourself accountable. Adjust as needed based on feedback or market changes and celebrate progress along the way.

The Numbers Game

Understanding metrics is essential. For example, assess your email list’s open rates and estimated conversion rates to predict sales. Plan around this data, considering social media impact, advertising, and other promotional efforts. A strategic, data-driven approach turns abstract aspirations into tangible results.

Celebrating Success

Every step forward is a victory. From finishing your manuscript to securing preorders, take pride in your progress. Recognizing achievements will keep you motivated and grounded as you work toward your ultimate goal.

By blending ambition with a strategic mindset, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate the complexities of publishing. Embrace the power of goal setting and watch your writing career take off.

How to Love Book Marketing (Even If You Hate It)

How to Love Book Marketing (Even If You Hate It)

How to Love Book Marketing (Even if you Hate It)

Written by Alexa Bigwarfe

When someone says book marketing, what’s your first reaction?

For many authors, it’s:

  • Overwhelmed
  • Exhausted
  • Invisible
  • Confused
  • Frustrated

And sometimes… excited (with a side of panic).

If that’s you, you’re not alone.

But do you REALLY hate marketing?

Maybe you don’t actually hate book marketing.
Maybe you hate what you’ve been told book marketing is.

And once you understand what book marketing for authors really looks like, everything shifts.

Book Marketing Is Not Selling

Hear me out.

One of the biggest misconceptions about book marketing for authors is this:

Marketing = selling

Not true!

Selling sounds like:

  • “Buy my book!”
  • “Available now!”
  • “Get your copy today!”

And if that’s your entire strategy, of course it feels uncomfortable. Gross, even.

But when you shift to thinking about book marketing as relationship building and storytelling, it feels a lot nicer to digest.

Storytelling for marketing is:

  • why your book matters
  • who it’s for
  • what it helps readers feel or achieve
  • why someone should care

Think about it:

Have you ever recommended a book, a show, or a trip?

That’s marketing.

You didn’t feel pushy—you were just sharing something you loved.

That’s what effective book marketing feels like.

You Already Know How to Market Your Book

Most authors don’t realize this:

You already know how to do book marketing.

If you’ve ever:

  • recommended a book
  • shared a favorite product
  • told someone about a great experience

…you already have the skills.

The challenge is applying that same energy to your own book—because now it feels personal.

That’s where fear shows up:

  • What if no one cares?
  • What if I fail?
  • What if I do it wrong?

So instead, many authors avoid marketing altogether.

The #1 Book Marketing Strategy Shift

If you’re struggling with book marketing, start here:

It’s not about you. It’s about the reader.

Even if you wrote a memoir.

Readers are asking:

  • What’s in this for me?
  • How will this make me feel?
  • Why should I read this?

When you shift from:

“How do I talk about my book?”

to:

“What does my reader need?”

…your entire book marketing strategy becomes clearer and easier.

Why Authors Feel Overwhelmed by Book Marketing

Most authors don’t hate book marketing—they’re just approaching it in a way that doesn’t work.

Here’s why it feels so hard:

1. Starting Too Late

Many authors wait until the book is finished to think about marketing.

2. Trying to Do Everything

Social media, ads, email, PR—without a clear plan.

3. Following the Wrong Advice

Trying strategies that don’t fit their personality or lifestyle.

4. Not Knowing Their Ideal Reader

Without a clear audience, marketing feels scattered and ineffective. How can you tell effective stories when you don’t know who you’re telling them to?

The Biggest Mistake in Book Marketing

The #1 mistake in book marketing for authors?

Waiting until your book is finished to start marketing.

This leads to:

  • stress
  • rushed decisions
  • low visibility
  • disappointing sales

Instead, the best time to start your book marketing strategy is:

6–18 months before launch

Or at minimum—while you’re still writing.

Because by launch day, you want:

  • an audience
  • an email list
  • early readers
  • relationships
  • momentum

Your Book Is Not for Everyone

Here’s something every author needs to hear:

Your book is not for everyone.

And that’s exactly what makes your marketing stronger.

The goal of book marketing for authors is not to reach everyone.

It’s to reach:
the right readers.

The more specific you are about:

  • who your book is for
  • what they love
  • what they’re searching for

…the easier it becomes to connect and sell.

What Actually Works in Book Marketing

Successful authors don’t do everything.

They do the right things consistently.

Here’s what works:

  • Building relationships before selling
  • Sharing stories instead of constant promotion
  • Choosing platforms that fit their strengths
  • Staying consistent (not perfect)
  • Creating content their readers care about

And most importantly:

They focus on storytelling and word-of-mouth marketing, through building relationships which builds fans.

Because when you give your readers something to talk about, everything changes.

You Don’t Need to Do Everything

Let’s simplify your book marketing strategy.

You do NOT need to:

  • be on every social media platform
  • post every day
  • follow every trend
  • create content you hate

You need a plan that:

  • fits your life
  • fits your personality
  • connects with your readers

Because the best book marketing strategy is the one you’ll actually follow.

How to Start Loving Book Marketing

You don’t have to love it overnight.

But you can make it easier starting today:

  • Focus on storytelling, not selling
  • Get clear on your ideal reader
  • Choose 1–2 marketing channels
  • Start before you feel ready
  • Stay consistent

And most importantly:

Do it in a way that feels authentic to you.

Final Thoughts on Book Marketing for Authors

You don’t need to become someone else to market your book.

You don’t need to be louder.
You don’t need to be pushy.

You just need to:

Tell the right story
to the right reader
in a way that feels like you.

That’s when book marketing starts to work—and maybe even becomes something you enjoy.

Kindle Unlimited Library Distribution is a Go!!

Kindle Unlimited Library Distribution is a Go!!

The Rumors Have Been Confirmed!

Amazon has announced a major update that KU authors have been waiting for: Kindle Unlimited library distribution is now possible. For the first time, ebooks enrolled in KDP Select can also be made available to public libraries—without breaking exclusivity.

This opens the door for KU authors to reach new readers, expand visibility, and earn additional income through library sales. Here’s how to take advantage of this update and distribute your Kindle Unlimited ebook to libraries.

What Is KDP Select?

KDP Select is Amazon’s optional program for Kindle eBooks only that provides extra benefits (like inclusion in Kindle Unlimited and promotional tools) in exchange for exclusivity.

Requirements to enroll in KDP Select:

  • You must have exclusive rights to the primary content of your Kindle eBook. Public domain content is not eligible.
  • Your Kindle eBook must remain exclusive to the Kindle Store during the 90-day enrollment period.
  • New update: During this period, your ebook can also be distributed to public libraries.
  • Print, audio, or video versions of your book can still be distributed outside of Amazon.

📖 Learn more at the official KDP Select help page.

What Changed in KDP Select Exclusivity?

Amazon updated the KDP Select rules to say:

“During the 90-day enrollment period, the Kindle eBook can only be distributed through KDP and public libraries.”

This change officially allows Kindle Unlimited authors to distribute eBooks to libraries while remaining in the KU program.

Why Library Distribution Matters for KU Authors

  • Expanded Reach: Libraries help new readers discover your work.
  • Social Proof: Library visibility builds reviews and credibility.
  • New Income Streams: Libraries pay higher prices for eBooks and may use models that generate royalties per checkout.

How to Distribute Your Kindle Unlimited eBook to Libraries

The easiest way is through Draft2Digital’s library services.

Step-by-step guide:

  1. Create a Draft2Digital account at draft2digital.com.
  2. Add your book. Upload manuscript, cover, and metadata. (Tip: Use your own ISBN for broader distribution.)
  3. Select library services only. Deselect retailers. Choose: OverDrive, Hoopla, BorrowBox, Odilo, cloudLibrary, Baker & Taylor, and Palace Marketplace.
  4. Set your library pricing. Standard practice is 2–4x your retail ebook price (e.g., if your ebook is $3.99, price the library edition $7.99–$12.99).
  5. Confirm and publish. Verify your rights and submit.

MAKE CERTAIN YOU DE-SELECT all RETAILERS!

Library Distribution Models to Know

  • One Copy/One User: Library purchases one copy; one patron can check it out at a time.
  • Cost Per Checkout: Library pays per borrow; you earn royalties each time.

Tips for Success with Library eBook Distribution

  • Build reviews first. Libraries prioritize books with proven demand.

  • Price wisely. Too high may discourage purchases; too low reduces potential revenue.

  • Encourage readers to request your book. Demand drives library acquisitions.

Conclusion:

This update is a huge win for KU authors. For years, exclusivity kept library distribution off the table. Now, with Kindle Unlimited library distribution, you can enjoy both KU visibility and library reach.

📚 Start today: sign up with Draft2Digital, upload your KU eBook, and get your book into libraries worldwide.

Offset or Digital Printing – Which is Best for Your Book?

Offset or Digital Printing – Which is Best for Your Book?

This is a guest post from Lori McKnight at MCRL Overseas Group.

Which is better offset or digital printing a book?

The decision to offset print or digitally print your book or planner ultimately depends on your business’ goals, needs, and budget.

One type of printing is not better than the other…the best choice truly depends on your situation.

  • What’s your budget?
  • How many books or planners do you need?
  • What are your sales goals?
  • Are eco-friendly materials important?
  • Do you envision unique design and decorating features?
  • How much lead time do you have?

Image provided by MCRL Overseas Group

If you’re looking to print more than 300 books, planners or board books, then it’s worthwhile to get an offset printing quote.

Not only is offset printing less expensive for higher print runs, it gives you many more options for:

  • paper stock
  • PMS color matching Image provided by MCRL Overseas Group
  • non-standard sizes, including landscape books
  • unique features such as interactive flaps, textiles, branded pockets, tabs, glitter, etc.

Alternatively, if you want to print under 300 books or planners that are standard size, without much customization then digital printing may be the way to go.

The Pros and Cons

Offset Printing Pros

  • Most cost-effective for print runs > 300 books or planners
  • Highest quality printing with vibrant colors and crisp artwork
  • Wide range of paper stocks, custom options and eco-materials

Offset Printing Cons

  • Higher setup costs so uneconomical for print runs < 300
  • Longer lead time
  • Requires space to store inventory

Digital POD Printing Pros

  • Most cost-effective for small print runs
  • Faster turnaround as no set up is required
  • Print your books as you get orders (no inventory)

Digital POD Printing Cons

  • Cost per unit doesn’t change much with higher print runs
  • Profit margin is less
  • Limited selection of cover materials, paper, finishes and add-ons

This comparison chart lists additional factors you may want to consider when determining the best type of printing and printing partner for your project.

Thanks to MCRL Overseas Group for providing offset printing information

The Bottom Line

The best type of printing depends on your business goals and budget.

Digitally printing your book with vendors such as IngramSpark, Blurb, etc. will be less expensive than offset printing for small quantities.

Offset printing more than 300 copies of your book or planner with an offset printer like MCRL Overseas Group will be significantly less expensive than digitally printing. And as your quantity increases, the unit price drops so your profit margin increases.
