In this podcast episode, Alexa and Mindy discuss:
- What is Warren Publishing? A hybrid publishing company with over 36 years of history. Acquired by Mindy Kuhn nearly nine years ago.
- Types of books they publish: Children’s books, fiction, nonfiction, and business books.
- Key benefits of working with Warren Publishing: Authors retain their rights (like self-publishing); professional editing, design, marketing, and distribution included. They are highly selectivity—only 20% of submissions are accepted. They give higher royalty rates compared to traditional publishing.
- Tips for Authors Seeking Publication
- Make Two Lists: A wish list of what you want in a publisher or publishing route & a “no-go” list of what you don’t want (e.g., no upfront costs or specific deadlines).
- Research Your Publishing Options: Understand the spectrum: traditional publishing, self-publishing, hybrid, and others (e.g., AI-based publishing platforms). Choose a model that aligns with your goals and budget.
- Polish Your Manuscript: Ensure it’s as refined as possible before submission. Even if a publisher offers editing, first impressions matter.
- Prepare to Market Your Book: Be ready to actively promote your work, regardless of the publishing model. Know your target audience and comparative titles (comp titles).
Set up a dedicated author social media presence. - Why Hybrid Publishing is a Strong Option: A balance between traditional and self-publishing models. Offers professional support while allowing authors more control. Growing acceptance in the publishing industry (e.g., award recognition for hybrid presses).
Ideal for authors seeking collaboration and engagement in the publishing process. - Encouragement for Writers: Writing and publishing are a marathon, not a sprint. Be realistic about expectations—focus on creating quality work and enjoying the process. Publishing a book is always exciting, no matter how many you’ve done before.

Want to know more about Kathryn Day?
Alexa Bigwarfe’s story is one of resilience, love, and purpose born out of profound grief. In May 2011, Alexa was thrilled to learn she was expecting identical twin daughters. However, her joy was soon tempered by complications from Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), a rare condition that affects identical twins sharing a placenta. As a result, her daughters were born approximately ten weeks premature.
Tragically, Kathryn, one of the twins, passed away two days later in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Her sister Charis remained in the NICU for 12 weeks before coming home healthy.
